Políticas de cierre de escuelas rurales en Iberoamérica

Actions involving the closing of low-enrollment rural schools to force students to move to larger schools are not new. They began in the United States from the end of the 19th century and since then they have been applied with varying degrees of intensity in many nations through various modalities. Although these actions have been sustained on the grounds that small schools are of low quality, these measures are basically based on purely economic criteria: it is cheaper for the State to support larger schools than several small and dispersed schools.

This book gathers studies carried out by academics from Spain, Chile, Colombia and Mexico, which examine the reasons that have justified the closure of rural schools in these countries, as well as the effects that these measures have brought to students, teachers and members. of rural towns, in addition to suggesting a series of proposals to deal with these educational policies. In this way, they subscribe to a field of study practically absent in current educational research.
